Boss reflects on defeat to Blackburn Rovers in final pre-season friendly.

  • Caldwell takes positives from performance in defeat to Sky Bet Championship side.
  • Scoring whilst on top a focus point for Latics manager.
  • Praise for Michael Jacobs and Max Power in new system.

Gary Caldwell took the positives from his side’s performance despite a 3-0 defeat to Sky Bet Championship side Blackburn Rovers in their final pre-season fixture before the start of the 2015/16 campaign.

Caldwell admitted it was fortunate his side were not playing for points this weekend and he expects his side to defend better when they face Coventry City next weekend.

“I’m disappointed to lose and especially concede the three goals,” he explained. “There were a lot more positives we could take from the game, than there were negatives, though.

“We controlled the game for an hour against a very good Championship team so we can take a lot from that but we have to be disappointed with the goals we conceded, and the way we conceded them, late on.

“Scoring when we’re on the front foot is something we have to work on, when we’re in control like we were earlier in the game, we have to put the ball in the net.

“With the goals we conceded at the end, we need to dig in a bit and hold on that bit longer.”

“Fortunately this week we’re not playing for points but next week we do and we’ll be ready for that.”

Caldwell was pleased to see Will Grigg and Craig Davies add match minutes to their pre-season whilst Max Power and debutant Michael Jacobs impressed.

“Everyone got good minutes in against a high quality team and that’s what we wanted,” Caldwell continued.

“I thought Michael [Jacobs] did well, I thought him and Max Power were excellent because in the first-half we played with a different shape and caused them a lot of problems, controlled the game and should have been in front.”
