  • “We have some leaders in the dressing room, but Craig’s experience gives him the edge” – Gary Caldwell.
Wigan Athletic manager Gary Caldwell has this morning named Craig Morgan as club captain ahead of the 2015-16 Sky Bet League One campaign which kicks off at Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena tomorrow, Saturday 8 August.

Morgan joined Latics this summer after his contract with Rotherham United expired, and turned down several other offers to join the club.

Caldwell sees him as a natural leader and said although it was a difficult decision, he felt Morgan was the obvious choice:

“Craig has captained promotion-winning sides before so he knows what is required to be successful at this level.

“He was brought in for those leadership qualities because they will be needed this season. We want players who will take responsibility and we have got some good characters in the dressing room, people that will lead by example but also have the experience to lead the younger players.

“There were several candidates for the armband, which is why Jason Pearce will be our vice-captain, but I feel Craig’s experience gave him the edge and I’m sure our supporters will warm to him quickly when they see the sort of player and leader he is.”
