  • “We are fortunate that someone of his pedigree and experience has come available” – Gary Caldwell
Wigan Athletic can confirm the signing of experienced Scotland international defender Kevin McNaughton, who was a free agent following the end of his contract at Cardiff City last month.

The 32-year-old has put pen to paper on a one year deal, having spent the last fortnight training with the rest of the Latics squad, featuring in the matches at Southport and Dundee. He successfully underwent a medical at the DW Stadium yesterday and is now officially a Wigan Athletic player.

Gary Caldwell, Latics manager said:

“I’ve known Kevin for a long time and we are fortunate that someone of his pedigree and experience has come available at the right time. He’s an important addition to the squad who will add terrific competition on the right hand side.”

Dundee-born McNaughton came through the ranks at Aberdeen and went on to appear over 200 times for The Dons. He then made almost 300 appearances in all competitions for Cardiff City after moving there in 2006, where he was Player of the Year in 2011, and part of the Championship-winning team of 2013.

He has also spent two separate spells on loan at Bolton Wanderers in the past two seasons.

After being voted PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year in 2002, he went on to earn four full caps for Scotland, the last of which came alongside Gary Caldwell in 2008 against the Czech Republic.
