- First Kicks game of 2015-16 season.
- Closely played final match finishes 1-0 to Coventry.
- Latics win penalty shootout at Ricoh Arena.
Coventry City’s Kicks team welcomed players from the Wigan Athletic Hag Fold and Atherton Kicks programmes last weekend, ahead of the first team’s opening game of the 2015-16 season.
The teams started the day at the Goals Soccer Centre in Coventry; a close competition followed and the final game finished 1-0 to Coventry.
All of the players and coaches then headed to the Ricoh Arena to watch the match and to take part in a half time penalty shootout competition, where two great saves and five goals secured a 5-2 victory for the Latics.
Connor McClean, the Latics Kicks goalkeeper, said: “It was great to come and play at Coventry; me and the team really enjoyed the trip and the chance to take on another Kicks team.
“Getting to take part in the penalty shootout in front of the travelling Latics fans was great, especially when I saved a few of their penalties!”
Latics Kicks is a football programme that provides hundreds of 12-19 year olds around Wigan with football and sports coaching every week and is supported by the Premier League, Sport England and Wigan and Leigh Homes.
