Wigan Athletic Community Trust team runners up at Home International Tournament.
Teenage footballers representing Wigan Athletic and England at the Coalfields Regeneration Trust Game On Home International Tournament held in Cardiff, made it all the way to the final match of the competition last weekend, narrowly losing 2-1 to Scotland after taking the game to extra time.
The team was made up of players from Shakerley and Hag Fold who take part in Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Game On football sessions.
Game On football sessions are provided by Wigan Athletic Community Trust in partnership with Coalfields Regeneration Trust, and the Home International Tournament is a celebration of the football project’s work around the country over the previous 12 months.
Dale Wood, a Community Cohesion coach for Wigan Athletic Community Trust who managed the teams through to the finals, said: “Our team played brilliantly throughout the competition and it was a credit to the players that they made it to the final match.
“It was a really close game and that showed when it went to extra time for the deciding goal.
“Thanks to everyone from Game On Wales and Coalfields Regeneration Trust who organised the tournament – our players all enjoyed themselves and the trip to Wales!”
Game On will be resuming in September. To find out more about the sessions and locations, please contact Tom Drake, Community Cohesion Co-Ordinator, on 01942 488 530 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
