Latics head to Stoke City's training unable to qualify for the semi-final of the Final Third Development League Cup, after Port Vale beat Wrexham 2-0 in early November to go top of Group C on seven points, leaving Latics in third on three.
The hosts still have a chance to progress, with a victory of any score sending them through as group winners on goal difference over the Valiants.
Latics are looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats in recent weeks, having lost to Wrexham last month and more recently Accrington Stanley in the Lancashire FA Senior Cup.
Stoke on the other hand are in fine form, winning their last four matches in the Under 21 Premier League Division Two, with victories over Arsenal, Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa, taking them into fifth place, just three from the top.
