Gary Caldwell leads training session for Latics Kicks.
Wigan Athletic defender Gary Caldwell recently led a coaching session for Latics Kicks participants, who are currently working towards their Level One Coaching Football awards.
Wigan Athletic Community Trust are providing the youngsters with the opportunity to complete the coaching award, following their ongoing commitment to attending and volunteering at Latics Kicks sessions.
After developing his coaching skills with the Wigan Athletic Academy throughout the 2014/15 season, Gary shared his knowledge and coaching techniques with the youngsters, as he led the training session at Wigan Youth Zone.
Gary said: “I loved coming down today; the youngsters were really enthusiastic and I got some good feedback from the session.
“I’m learning something new and different myself; although I’ve been a player for a long time, you have to have a different mind-set to be a coach.
“It’s great for me to have the experience of coaching them and hearing my own voice within a session, as well as passing on my knowledge.
“As they’re doing their Level One coaching, it was great to speak to them to see what they’re learning in the classroom and to see if I could learn anything from them too.
Gary added: “These guys just need to work hard and to listen to the good people that are providing the awards and they’ll go far.”
Jordan Hill, a participant and volunteer at Latics Kicks Hag Fold session, said: “It was great to have a professional footballer come down to the session today – it’s something that I’ll always remember doing.
“I don’t think I’d have had the chance to do the coaching award and meet Gary Caldwell if it wasn’t for going to Latics Kicks sessions, so I’m really thankful to the Community Trust for giving me the opportunity.”
The Level One Coaching Awards and sessions are being provided by the Lancashire FA.
Latics Kicks provides football coaching throughout the week to hundreds of 12-19 year olds, in partnership with the Premier League, Sport England and Wigan and Leigh Housing.
