Ryan Jennings provided the moment of magic in a controlled performance as Latics won 1-0 away at Tranmere Rovers to return to the summit of the Final Third Development League West.

The forward's wonder strike 66 minutes in was much deserved for Joe Parkinson's side, who always looked comfortable in a defensively sound display.

Latics made two changes from the team that lost 4-0 away to Shrewsbury Town last week, with Jennings and Mayowa Balogun coming in for Reece McNally and the departed Fraser Fyvie.

An early flurry of chances as Vauxhall Motors' Rivacre Park saw right back Luke Burke, midfielder Matty Hamilton and wide man Jordan Flores all denied by Tranmere goalkeeper Sam Ramsbottom.

The difficult surface, which had only been passed fit as playable and hour or so before kick off, demanded high concentration levels as players on both sides had to judge every single bounce and flight of the ball perfectly.

Latics did so impressively, and nearly took a deserved lead just after the half hour mark, only for Flores to be denied when he hit the post from a free kick.

Half chances were created up until the goal on 66 minutes and it was one worthy of winning any game.

Controlled with the outside of his right foot on the wing, Jennings dropped inside onto his left foot, picking his spot perfectly as he found the top left corner.

The goal gave Latics a suitable boost for the remainder of the game, with more good passing football featuring until the final whistle.

Tim Chow, Louis Robles and Josh Gregory all made substitute appearances to freshen things up, as Latics played the game out with some smart football to return to the top of the league.
