England Under 21 defender Harry Maguire has joined Latics on a short-term loan deal from Hull City.
The 21-year-old made his name at Sheffield United as a cultured centre-half and made the move to Humberside last summer, where he is highly rated by Hull City’s former Latics manager Steve Bruce.
Latics manager Malky Mackay said of the young defender’s arrival at the DW Stadium:
“We are losing Liam Ridgewell after tomorrow’s match and it was important we moved fast to replace him. Harry is someone I have admired for a long-time and I thank Steve for allowing him to continue his development with us.
“He’s a powerful player with a lot of experience for his age and he fits the profile of the players we want to bring in; young, hungry and desperate to play.”
Sheffield-born Maguire made his debut for the Blades shortly after his 18th birthday and went on to play 166 games in all competitions, earning his move to the KC Stadium after he was named Sheffield United
Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons between 2012 and 2014, when he was also named in the PFA League One Team of the Year for those three campaigns.
Capped once by England at under-21 level, Maguire made his international bow in a 2-0 victory over Northern Ireland in November 2012 at Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road.
