Latics' Under 14s set for Barclays U14 Premier League Cup quarter-final.

A superb effort from Wigan Athletic’s Under 14 side has seen the young Latics progress to the quarter-finals of the Barclays U14 Premier League Cup.

A 3-2 extra-time victory over Sunderland at the Academy of Light on Wearside has set up a quarter-final tie with Aston Villa on Sunday 15 March.

Academy Manager Gregor Rioch was ecstatic with the result in the north-east and he was full of praise for the group.

“Going to Sunderland and producing a performance and result like that is such a great achievement for the lads, I’m so pleased,” Rioch said.

“The players, their families and everyone associated with Wigan Athletic should be so proud of their success and we hope they can continue their run.

“Credit must go to the boys firstly for their effort and application in training which has reflected in their results, the coaches for their tireless work in creating a good group and also Kenny Williams who has done some really good recruitment work at that level.”
