Australian international defender Chris Herd has signed for Wigan Athletic from Aston Villa on loan until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old joins Latics having made 42 appearances for Villa, whilst picking up Football League experience with loans at Port Vale, Wycombe Wanderers, Lincoln City and most recently Bolton Wanderers.

Latics manager Malky Mackay welcomed Herd to the club, saying:

“I’m delighted that Chris has been able to join us on loan until the end of the season, he’s a player I’ve looked at a lot over a period of time.  I feel that his energy, his athleticism and his tenacity will be things that can really help us out.

“He’s got Premier League and Football League experience and he’s another young player who wants to kick on at our club and solidify a position here, so I’m delighted we’ve managed to get him.”

Herd was born in Melbourne and raised in Perth, before moving to England aged 16 to carry out a two-year Youth Training Scheme with Villa, before progressing through their ranks and eventually making appearances for the first team and going on to play for Australia. He is capped at Under 20 level and has now made three appearances at senior level.
