Tavernier joins Bristol City on loan.

  • Defender heads to League One promotion chasers until the end of the season.
  • Tavernier available for the Robins' trip to Scunthorpe United this weekend.
  • Former Newcastle man featured in three of Malky Mackay’s nine games in charge.
Wigan Athletic defender James Tavernier has joined Sky Bet League One side Bristol City on a loan deal to the end of the season.

The 23-year-old will link up with Steve Cotterill’s side ahead of this weekend’s trip to Scunthorpe United as the Robins look to return to the top of League One.

Tavernier has featured three times under new boss Malky Mackay and has recorded 13 appearances in his Latics career to date since signing from Newcastle United last summer.

Mackay believes the loan can benefit all parties:

“James wants to be playing games every week but unfortunately we’ve not been able to guarantee him that here at the moment,” he said.

“Steve Cotterill at Bristol City wanted to take him to help their promotion bid and if he gets regular football at a good level it will help James’s progression, which will be in the long term benefit of both James himself and Wigan Athletic.”
