Wigan Athletic players take part in Train with Latics session.

Wigan Athletic duo Rob Kiernan and Callum McManaman took part in a football skills session earlier this week, as part of the Train with Latics education course organised by Wigan Athletic Community Trust.

The Train with Latics programme gives unemployed 16-18 year olds the chance to study for a BTEC Level 2 in Sport qualification and complete an FA Level 1 coaching football award over a nine month period.

Rob and Callum joined in with the session at Wigan Youth Zone, warming up with the group in a game of football tennis, before answering the youngsters’ questions about the coaching drills they took part in and playing football.

Rob said: “It was a really enjoyable event today. The facilities here are brilliant and it’s great for these guys to have the opportunity to come and learn in a stress free zone like this, where they can really enjoy themselves too.”

Train with Latics participant, Dylan Jeffers, then led a football skills practice session, which Rob and Callum took part in and then gave feedback to, rating Dylan’s coaching skills in high regard.

Dylan said: “It was great having the professional footballers here today; it was a little difficult leading a session for them but the feedback that they gave me was great and I’ll definitely be using their suggestions going forward.”

Rob added: “Overall I thought the session that Dylan set up was very good; we could see his confidence improving throughout and we really enjoyed taking part.”

After completing the programme, Train with Latics students then get the chance to progress into a full time apprenticeship with the Community Trust.

Lucy Carrigg, a former Train with Latics participant who successfully gained a place on the apprenticeship programme, said: “I’d definitely recommend Train with Latics. The course really helped me to improve my confidence and gave me a great understanding of delivering sessions, both practically going out coaching football and also in terms of safeguarding and health and safety.”

Train with Latics is provided in partnership with Pro-Co, one of Wigan’s leading learning and skills providers.

The Community Trust are now looking for Train with Latics participants for 2015/16. If you would like to find out more about the scheme or sign up to take part next year, please contact Adam Sherratt, the Community Trust’s Education Officer for 16-19 year olds, on 01942 488 530, or email
