Club announce new partnership with Wigan Schools Football Association.
Wigan Athletic is delighted to announce a new partnership with the Wigan Schools Football Association (WSFA), that will reinvigorate district football in Wigan and give talented young footballers the chance to represent the town in competitive matches.
WSFA is a voluntary organisation run by teachers from Wigan schools that organises the Town’s School Boys teams and school competitions.
The new agreement will see both the Club’s Academy and Wigan Athletic Community Trust support the WSFA by providing:
- Playing kit and equipment for the Under 14 and Under 15 Wigan School Boys teams.
- Coaches to help run the Under 14 and Under 15 sides.
- Sponsorship of the annual Schools Cup.
- Use of a mini-bus for transporting teams to game.
- Support to create an Under 11’s Wigan School Boys team for the start of the 2014/2015 season.
Academy Manager Gregor Rioch said: “We are delighted to be able to support the WSFA in trying to improve competitive football for youngsters in Wigan.
“We hope that by supporting the district sides we can improve the playing pathway for school pupils. As a football club we want to see as many talented footballers from schools in Wigan as possible come to the Academy and eventually, if they are good enough, make it all the way to the first team.”
Chairman of the WSFA Paul Santus said: “Both the association and Wigan Athletic share the same vision, which is to see local boys of Wigan representing their town at schoolboy level and providing them with the best opportunity to progress all the way to professional level and hopefully play for Wigan Athletic.
“To have the support of Wigan Athletic is fantastic and we look forward to continuing to work with them in the future and strengthening our already strong links. “
In addition to the support of Wigan Athletic, the WSFA is one of the first district associations in the country to benefit from a grant of £1,000 from the Premier League to support their programme.
The grant from the Premier League is part of their ongoing support to improving school sport in Wigan, which includes an annual grant of £90,000 to Wigan Athletic Community Trust.
David Ebberson from the English Schools FA said: “The partnership between Wigan Athletic FC and WSFA, to support schoolboy football throughout the region, is a wonderful example of how we want this programme to run.
“The idea of local players working closely with their local professional football club is one that excites me hugely, helping to develop talent throughout the area. The opportunity for young players to be a part of this programme truly is fantastic.”
The Under 14 and Under 15 Town Teams were introduced to the Latics fans at half time during the home game against Blackburn Rovers at the DW Stadium on Saturday.
