Winners of Kinder+Sport Girls Cup North West final

A girl’s football team representing Wigan Athletic won the North West area finals of the Kinder+Sport Girls Cup yesterday and are now one stage away from playing at Wembley in the national finals of the competition.

The team of year 7 and 8 students from St Mary’s High School, Astley, conceded only one goal throughout the competition, which came in the final where Latics beat Fleetwood Town 3-1 after extra time.

They will now take part in the northern final of the competition in Barnsley next month, with the chance to play in the national final at Wembley Stadium ahead of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final in March.

Caroline Wilson, PE teacher at St Mary’s, said: “We were all thrilled to win the North West competition; It’s great for the girls to have this opportunity to come and represent Wigan Athletic and play against so many other girls football teams from around the country.

“By providing the competition and fantastic final venue, the Football League have created a brilliant opportunity and real incentive for more girls to play football.

“The team are now really looking forward to playing in the Northern final next month.”

Prior to the competition, the team got the opportunity to visit Christopher Park Training Ground and meet the Wigan Athletic players, with Latics captain Emmerson Boyce on hand to present the girls with new kits to wear for the tournament.

Girls Football and Sports Coach at the Community Trust, Stephanie Greensill, also provided a training session for the girls at Wigan Youth Zone, to practice their football skills.

Stephanie said: “It’s really important to the Community Trust to provide as many opportunities as possible for girls to take part in more sport.

“The Girls Cup competition offers a brilliant way for girls around the country to play football and hopefully continue their involvement outside of the competition.”

The Kinder+Sport Girls Cup competition is organised by the Football League.
