7 January 2015

Club confirms that Spanish striker Oriol Riera loaned to Deportivo de La Coruna.

  • Oriol Riera loaned to Real Club Deportivo de La Coruna until the end of the season.
  • 28-year-old Riera leaves after scoring one league goal so far in 13 league appearances.
  • Riera has made just one substitute appearance under Malky Mackay.
Wigan Athletic are now able to officially confirm, following the completion of official paperwork, that Spanish striker Oriol Riera has returned to his native Spain to join La Liga side Real Club Deportivo de La Coruna on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The 28-year-old joined Latics last summer from Osasuna but has managed just one league goal so far in 13 outings in the Championship this season, starting just one league match since August. He has appeared just once under Malky Mackay, coming on as a late substitute against Rotherham United.

Mackay said: “The reality is that we need to trim the squad and this loan will allow Oriol the opportunity to play more regularly, which is what he needs to do. We wish him success back in Spain and will reassess his situation in the summer.”

Riera scored his one goal for the club in the 1-0 win over Blackpool in August.
