ST THOMAS’ WIN KIDS CUP COMPETITION

26 January 2015

Malky Mackay watches St Thomas’ win final of Kids Cup competition.

Wigan Athletic manager Malky Mackay was on hand to watch pupils from St Thomas’ Primary School, Ashton, win the Wigan finals of the Kinder+Sport Kids Cup competition last week.

The Under 11s tournament was organised by Wigan Athletic Community Trust to find a team to represent Latics in the national Football League Kids Cup competition.

This year saw over 300 youngsters from 40 local primary schools taking part in the football tournament.

After watching the final game of the competition, where St Thomas’ won 3-2 over pupils from St Wilfrid’s Primary School, Malky presented the winners with their medals and trophy, before speaking to the participants, teachers, coaches and parents who attended the competition.

Malky said: “Today’s competition has been such a well-organised event; for so many schools to send their children to take part in the 6-a-side competition is fantastic, you just can’t beat it. I watched the final and St Thomas’ put in a really committed performance to come from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

“It was terrific to see so many parents here today supporting the event too. We have a brilliant Community Trust here at Wigan Athletic and why wouldn’t parents want to send their children to take part in something that’s so well run in such a safe environment.

“The club put a lot into the Wigan community and the community are pouring it back into the club. It’s something that we should absolutely foster, this real support for each other.”

Through winning the tournament, the year 5 and 6 pupils from St Thomas’ now have the opportunity to represent Latics in the Northern finals of the Kids Cup, which takes place in Bolton next month.

Gareth Nolan, Schools Sports Manager and organiser of the Kids Cup Wigan finals, said: “This is the biggest event that the Community Trust run each year, and on behalf of the Trust, I’d like to thank all of the schools who have competed today, all of the coaches and teachers who have looked after their teams and all of the parents who have come down to support their children.”

The winners of next month’s Northern competition will go on to play at Wembley before the Sky Bet Championship Play Off Final, in the national finals of the tournament.
