A late Adrian Purzycki winner saw Latics reclaim top spot in the Football League Youth Alliance with a narrow 1-0 victory away at 2013/14 winners Blackpool on Saturday.

In a tight game at Squires' Gate, both sides pushed each other to the limit, but it was only after Latics went down to 10 men that the deadlock would be broken.  Sean Harrison was harshly dismissed for an altercation as Latics set up for a free kick, but Purzycki took advantage once play had resumed to grab the all important goal.

Victory for Latics saw them extend their unbeaten run to 13 games in the league, taking back top spot from Bury who drew 1-1 with Tranmere Rovers.

Latics began brightly when Alex Cvetkovic tested Blackpool goalkeeper Miles Boney, but Latics' stopper Owen Evans had to be equally as vigilant in the opening exchanges, tipping a Dominic Telford effort from distance over the bar.

Centre back Liam Langford then produced a long range effort of his own to give Boney a similar problem, but neither team could break the deadlock.

Chances were exchanged throughout, with Latics being forced to clear off the line in the second half, before Adam Anson came close to giving Latics the lead on 71 minutes only to see his shot blocked by Boney.

Then came the talking point and a whirlwind couple of minutes which saw Latics triumph in the face of adversity.

Bizarrely, a free kick awarded to Latics resulted in them going down to ten men when Harrison was sent off for an altercation with Alieu Njie.  Naturally Blackpool would hope to gain an advantage, but as play resumed Purzycki broke free in the box to squeeze his shot under the body of Boney.

Latics had to hold firm to keep Blackpool at bay for the closing moments, but they completed the job to secure yet another victory in the Youth Alliance.
