Latest Community Trust apprentices have their chance to quiz Latics manager Malky Mackay.

Five sports apprentices recruited by Wigan Athletic Community Trust, met Latics manager Malky Mackay last week, at Christopher Park Training Ground.

Malky greeted the apprentices and offered his advice on coaching and leadership, as well as asking them about the work that they had done so far in the Wigan community.

The youngsters started the 18-month apprenticeship with the Community Trust in October and will gain a Level 3 qualification in Sport while working on a range of football and sports projects during their placements.

18 year old apprentice Nick Blackledge said: “Prior to the apprenticeship I was working part time in a number of different places and looking for something I believed I could have a career in.

“Meet the Manager was great, when I first became an apprentice I was overwhelmed at the chance I had been given and knowing you have a chance to keep progressing in a sport you love is enough to encourage anyone to do their best at all times.”

The Community Trust has operated an apprentice scheme in partnership with Pro- Co, one of Wigan’s leading learning and skills providers, for the last three years and past apprentices have gone on to continue their studies at University, as well as finding full time employment with the Trust.

Chief Executive of Pro-Co, Carol Halford said: “We have a great working relationship with Wigan Athletic Community Trust, mainly because we share the same ethos in endeavouring to give our learners the best possible experience that we can.

“The organisation of events such as ‘Meet the Manager’ and hearing feedback from apprentices like Nick is one of the most rewarding aspects of our strong partnership with them.”
