Learn more about Latics’ new goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell.

1. Born on 12 September 1988 in Sheffield.  Richard shares his birthday with former Latics midfielder David Thompson (1977) and former defender Steven Caldwell (1980).

2. O’Donnell began his career in the youth set up at Sheffield Wednesday, but made his Football League debut at Oldham Athletic during his fourth loan spell away from Hillsborough, following experience with York City, Buxton and Rotherham United.

3. After a further loan spell with Grimsby Town, in which he made 10 appearances, O’Donnell made his Sheffield Wednesday debut on 19 March 2011 in a 2-0 defeat away to Southampton.

4. He went on to play a total of 20 games for the Owls, keeping five clean sheets as part of their promotion winning season in 2011/12.  O’Donnell then joined Chesterfield in May 2012.

5. Before leaving Hillsborough the goalkeeper extended his experience with an 11-game loan spell at then League Two outfit Macclesfield Town.

6. In the 2012/13 season O’Donnell made a total of 37 appearances split across two teams, as parent club Chesterfield loaned him to Stockport County midway through the campaign.  He made 17 appearances for the Spireites and 20 for County.

7. In July 2013 he joined League One Walsall and played every single game of the 2013/14 season keeping 13 clean sheets in the process.

8. The following season in 2014/15 O’Donnell played 54 times, missing only two matches, this time keeping 21 clean sheets.

9. O’Donnell made his 100th consecutive Walsall appearances on 3 April 2015 in a 0-0 draw at home to Notts County.

10. After a stand-out season between the sticks for the Saddlers, O’Donnell was named Player of the Season by Walsall supporters, and Players’ Player of the Season.
