Community Trust footballers win Game On tournament and chance to represent England!

For the third year in a row, footballers representing Wigan Athletic at Coalfield Regeneration Trust’s England Game On tournament were victorious, winning the chance to progress to the home nation’s finals and represent England!

The players, selected from Wigan Athletic Community Trust’s Game On sessions at Hag Fold and Shakerley, beat off competition from Barnsley, Derby County, Doncaster Rovers and Hartlepool, before winning 4-0 against Rotherham in the final match.

The team will now go on to represent England in the home nation’s final in Wales next month.

Tom Drake, Community Cohesion Co-Ordinator, said: “Firstly I’d like to say a huge well done to our players – they performed to the best of their abilities and were well deserved winners of the competition.

“The facilities at the Keepmoat Stadium were brilliant, thanks to Doncaster Rovers for hosting the games and to Coalfields Regeneration Trust for organising the competition.”

Game On sessions are provided by Wigan Athletic Community Trust in partnership with Coalfields Regeneration Trust and new sessions have been confirmed to begin in Worsley Mesnes this September, which will be free for 12-19 year olds.
