Latics step up fitness work in La Manga practice match.

  • Latics continue to build fitness in La Manga practice match.
  • 2-1 win against Queen of the South.
  • Power and trialist on target.

Wigan Athletic upped their pre-season training in La Manga tonight as they continued to build their fitness ahead of pre-season friendlies and the new Sky Bet League One season, winning a practice match against Queen of the South 2-1.

The match was played in thirds of 25 minutes each, with two mixed teams as listed below.  Team two came on in the second third, with 10 changes made.

After just 25 seconds David Perkins assisted the opening goal for Latics' trialist, before Max Power scored from a free kick in the 20th minute following a foul on Ryan Jennings.

Queen of the South pulled a goal back in the 61st minute, with the scoring ending 2-1.

Speaking after the game, Gary Caldwell was pleased with Latics' fitness preparations.

"We're out here to build up our fitness and the work so far has been very good.  We stepped it up slightly with a practice match, but it was purely for fitness purposes.

"The match was split into thirds so that every players could get a run out.  Doing this will help us to be ready for the friendlies when we return home, and will benefit us heading toward the new season."

Latics' two teams were as follows:

Team One: O'Donnell, Taylor, Morgan, Perkins, Trialist, Daniels, Pearce, Power, Jennings, Odelusi, Chow

Team Two: Nicholls, Taylor-Sinclair, Mckay, McCann, Huws, Perch, Tavernier, Flores, Barnett, Waghorn, Jennings
