Premier League 4 Sport tennis players runners up at national tournament.
- Tennis players representing Wigan Athletic reach finals of national competition.
- Playing to retain their 2014 title.
- Players also watch afternoon play at Wimbledon.
A team of tennis aces representing Wigan Athletic Community Trust made it all the way to the finals of the Premier League 4 Sport National Tennis Tournament at the National Tennis Centre yesterday, in an effort to retain their title from last year, before heading to Wimbledon to take in the action.
Batting off competition from Bolton Wanderers, Derby County, Notts County and Southampton, the Wigan Athletic team, made up of Premier League 4 Sport tennis participants from Fred Longworth High School, came up against the previous year’s joint winners, Stoke City, in the final.
The game went all the way and it was left to a deciding point to find out who would be the overall winner for 2015 – Stoke City edged it, grazing the ball over the net to win the point.
Zac Taylor, Premier League 4 Sport co-ordinator, said: “The competition was brilliantly organised and the venue of the National Tennis Centre at Roehampton was excellent.
“Not only did our players represent themselves and the football club fantastically by making it to the finals for the second year in a row, but the opportunity for them to watch the afternoon’s play at Wimbledon was something I’m sure they won’t forget.
“Thanks to the Premier League and British Tennis for holding such a great event.”
The competition was organised by the Premier League and British Tennis, as a tournament celebrating the Premier League 4 Sport tennis programme.
