Long-term supporter and popular member of the community Mike Taylor passed away at the weekend aged 83.

The club were saddened to hear of the passing this week of one of its long-time friends, shareholders and supporters, Mike Taylor.

Born and bred in Beech Hill Wigan, Mike first went to watch Wigan Athletic at Springfield Park as a boy with his father.

A keen young footballer and later amateur referee, Mike progressed to being a linesman with the Football League.

Mike’s profession saw him work for Heinz for over 30 years and, in the 1980s, he was central in securing Heinz sponsorship for Wigan Athletic - a contribution that earned Mike a lifetime seat in the Directors Box at Latics.

He served Wigan Amateur Football League for over 65 years in various capacities, including Secretary, Chair, and was latterly made Lifetime President and, in spite of illness, he was determined to attend their presentation evening in May this year to give out a number of awards and trophies.

He also served the Lancashire Football Association for over 21 years and was presented with a long-service medal by Chief Executive David Burgess, at home, in the days leading up to his death. This was a very proud and moving moment for his family.

In addition to supporting grass roots football, Mike was keen to support business and commerce in the area and was a keen member of Junior Chamber of Commerce when it was first set up in Wigan.

Also serving as a Magistrate in the Wigan Borough for over 20 years, Mike was always the type of person who gives back into the community.

Mike’s family, including wife, Renee, daughter, Karen, and son, Adrian, are comforted by the many messages and cards that are arriving on a daily basis from people who knew Mike, and they are very grateful to all these people for kindly taking the time and trouble to contact them. The club sends its condolences to the family.

The funeral will take place on Thursday 9th July at 11:30 at St. Helens Crematorium and after at Houghwood Golf Club.
The family have requested no flowers, but instead donations to Wigan and Leigh Hospice.
