Billy Mckay was on target against Altrincham in Latics’ first domestic pre-season friendly on Tuesday evening, with a stunning effort from the edge of the area, but Michael Rankine’s equaliser before half time left the score all square.

All of Latics’ new summer signings were in action with the exception of striker’s Craig Davies and Will Grigg, the latter only having signed on the Tuesday afternoon.

Following Saturday’s clash, Latics will travel to Scotland for friendlies against Partick Thistle and Dundee.

It’s been a mixed start for our hosts in pre-season, with the Sandgrounders losing their opening friendly 2-1 away to Bootle on 11 July, before a 3-0 away victory at Marine on 14 July.

Latics and Southport have never met in a Football League fixture, nor have they met in cup competitions since Latics’ election into the FL, with the Sangrounders being replaced by ourselves in 1978.

The FA Cup in 1957 brought about the highest profile clash between the two teams, with Latics winning 2-1 away at Southport thanks to goals from B.Banks and Ted Buckle.  Unfortunately the cup run ended in the next round after holding Mansfield Town 1-1 at home, Latics lost 3-1 in the replay.

Other meetings with Southport have consisted of Lancashire Senior Cup matches in the 1960s, as well as Latics contesting 13 season with Southport Reserves from 1947 to 1960.
