Latics make quarter finals of Walking Football tournament in Blackpool.Wigan Athletic Community Trust were on the road in Blackpool yesterday (17 June) as their Walking Football team from ‘Trim Down Shape Up’ took part in an 11-team tournament organised by the Football League Trust and Blackpool Community Trust.
Latics made the quarter finals of the competition, but were defeated 3-1 by Crewe Alexandra following a successful group stage, which saw them draw with Carlisle United C and Fleetwood Town B, as well as defeating Blackpool C before a 3-0 defeat to Carlisle A.
The tournament, which was organised for over 50s, saw Blackpool and Crewe progress to the national finals at St. Georges Park.
At the event, Dean Grice from the Football League Trust commented:
“Those dreams you have as children of playing for your local team never truly go away, so the competition that teams represent in their local club and play in their colours.”
For one member of Latics' team, goalkeeper Ivor Morgan, it's been a new lease of life following open heart surgery six years ago.
Ivor was interviewed for BBC North West Tonight, and told report Richard Askam:
"I've always loved playing football and playing Walking Football has given me the chance to compete with other people now, it's been great for me."
Ivor's team mate Tony Bradshaw has lost four stone in just a matter of months and added:
"The comradery, not just between our own team, but with the other teams as well is unbelievable."
