Marus Bridge Primary School student John White, 7, was named as the winner of the Sport Achievement Award, sponsored by Wigan Athletic Community Trust, at the Wigan and Leigh Education Awards last week, following a highly successful year in his sport – cycling speedway.

Over the past 12 months, John has secured the titles for his age group in the British Youth and Junior League Championships, as well as being part of the Under 10s team who finished as runners up at the British Team Championships.

Former Latics skipper Matt Jackson was on hand to present the award on the night.
