Latics defender Gaetan Bong says he would like to Wigan Athletic supporters for the welcome he has received since signing for the club in January.
The Cameroonian international left back has featured in Latics’ last two matches, against Cardiff City and Blackpool, and has impressed in his first two appearances for the club.
And he says the messages he has received on Twitter as well as from supporters in the town and at Blackpool on Saturday, have made his settling in period with the club more comfortable.
“I’d like to thank the fans for all the tweets they send me,” Bong said. “I try to reply to them all and I think it’s good that they like me because it means they can see I give my all when I’m on the pitch.
“The reception for my first game when I arrived was great because it’s never easy to settle straight in but that helps me a lot as I try to find my best level.
“The fans were very good at Blackpool and I think this helped us a lot to give more in the difficult moments of the game – they helped us to both defend and attack when Blackpool tried to score.
“I think it’s important to celebrate with the fans and it was great to do that on Saturday because I can tell, even though I’ve just arrived, how difficult it has been for the fans.”
And the defender believes that hard work on the pitch is the only way Latics can beat the drop after getting his first taste of Championship football.
“I’ve played two games now; the first one we played well but we lost the game and that was bad for us but we continued to work and we followed the coach’s plan at Blackpool as best we could on a difficult pitch,” he added.
“We tried and gave our maximum so we took the three points, we’ll keep continuing to work hard and hopefully give the fans something more to cheer.”
High-flying Norwich City are next up for Latics on Wednesday evening and, despite the fine form of the Canaries, Bong believes this fixture is a good game to go into.
“A game like this is a good game because it’s harder and we take more pleasure from victory so in this situation we need to fight as a team like against Blackpool,” Bong continued.
“But I think Norwich is a good team to play because we can play on a better pitch too and hopefully get the ball down and play.”
