Last week saw Latics legend Arjan De Zeeuw feature in his final game for the Dutch National Police Football Team in a specially arranged fixture against a team of the 44-year-old’s former Telstar and career colleagues.
De Zeeuw’s side, which also featured former Latics man Denny Landzaat, won the match 5-0 at the Telstar Stadium in an evening which honoured the Dutch National Police Team captain for his service.
Taking place before SC Telstar’s first team fixture against Jong PSV on Friday 20 March, De Zeeuw was also joined by former professionals Michael Mols (Twente, Utrecht, Rangers and Feyenoord), Harald Wapenaar (Utrecht and Portsmouth), Yuri Cornelisse (NAC Breda and Groningen) and Laurens ten Heuvel.
Landzaat and De Zeeuw were not the only Latics faces on show during the evening in Velsen, North Holland, as four supporters flew the flag for the club, with Stuart Jones (pictured below), his father Trevor, his Uncle and their friend from the Netherlands, Leo all making the trip.
Organised by Trevor as part of Stuart’s pre-wedding events, they made the journey on the day of the game to show their support for the retiring defender, and got more than they bargained for when De Zeeuw, Landzaat and Telstar’s Chairman welcomed them with open arms.
Speaking after the game, Trevor told us:
“It was all part of Stuart’s ‘Stag Year’ as he gets married in August and I wanted to plan some events that really mean something to him as he’s a life-long Latics fan.
“I saw that ‘Arry was playing his last game and couldn’t let Stuart miss out on the opportunity to see him play for the final time as he was one of his heroes as a kid.
“‘Arry and Denny spotted us at the game and welcomed us over at the end to have some photos and join them in hospitality after the game. It was really humble from them both and the perfect gift for Stuart, the Telstar chairman even mentioned us in his speech!”
Trevor and Stuart's flag, left with Telstar as a reminder of their trip.
