No statement made on Caldwell retiring says Mackay.
- “Gary has not retired.” – Malky Mackay.
- Manager clears up reports on Club Captain.
- “He’s a very good influence and he’s been essential.”
Speaking in his pre-Norwich City press conference, Mackay said:
“I don’t really know where that’s come from, Gary’s not retired and he’s still part of my squad here.
“He’s Club Captain and a very good influence to have about the place, he’s still training with us and he hasn’t made any bold statement on retiring. I think the news has been a bit misguided on that one.
“Gary’s a natural leader and he’s been essential at the training ground since I arrived here. His voice in the dressing room is very prominent, but at the same time he’s a calm lad.
“I’ve known Gary for a long time, we were in the Scotland squad together a long time ago when he was only young and I was one of the more senior players, and even then I could see his influence.
“He’s exactly what we need at this club, a good character, and we’ll continue to keep building on that.”
