Hawkley Hall students to represent Wigan Athletic at Enterprise challenge finals.

A team of year 9 students from Hawkley Hall High School have won the chance to represent Wigan Athletic at the national finals of the Premier League Enterprise Challenge in London next month.

The Premier League Enterprise Challenge is an annual business competition, organised by the Premier League and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills that gives high school students the chance to present their business ideas to football clubs.

This year’s brief asked students to think of ways of attracting more families to football matches and yesterday the Hawkley Hall team joined eight other schools representing North West football clubs in presenting their ideas at the regional finals of the competition at Old Trafford.

Hawkley Hall’s winning idea was to introduce bingo cards at home games, which could be purchased for £1, with options such as first goal scorer, attendance and man of the match. They also proposed introducing a new challenge card for junior supporters to complete throughout the season, with tasks ranging from attending 5 away games to coming in fancy dress to a Halloween game.

Both the bingo and challenge cards offered prizes ranging from a pie at the stadium, to a behind-the-scene’s tour of Wigan Athletic’s training ground.

Head of Community, Tom Flower, who attended the competition at Old Trafford, said: “The students were great and spoke passionately about their ideas. Presenting in front of a room full of people is never easy for an adult to do, let alone students of their age.

“They were a credit to themselves, the school and the football club, and fingers crossed they can do just as well in London.”

Ahead of the regional finals, Wigan Athletic Chief Executive Jonathan Jackson, who was part of the judging panel that selected Hawkley Hall as Wigan Athletic’s team for the competition, led a workshop with the youngsters, giving them some suggestions and helping them to fine tune their ideas.

Jonathan said: “The Club are delighted that the Hawkley Hall students have made it to the finals of the Premier League Enterprise Challenge and I would personally like to congratulate the team on all of their hard work.

“I was very impressed with their ideas when I first heard them at the Wigan heats and really believe that the bingo and challenge cards are something that the football club could look into, as an appealing addition to the family match experience.”
