Jerome Sinclair and Martyn Waghorn launch new Premier League 4 Sport netball programme.
Wigan Athletic’s Jerome Sinclair and Martyn Waghorn joined England netball star Helen Housby at St Peter’s High School earlier this week, to launch a new netball programme that is being introduced by Wigan Athletic Community Trust.
The sporting stars joined 21 female year 9 students for the launch of the programme, with Helen starting the session by sharing her scoring tips in a shooting masterclass.
Martyn and Jerome then each joined a team as Goal Shooter, although the 0-0 score at the end of the game suggested they would be better sticking to football!
Martyn said: “It’s been really good coming down and seeing a great sport being provided by Wigan Athletic Community Trust.
“It must have been brilliant for the girls taking part here to get to meet Helen and to learn from her with the masterclass, it gives them encouragement to continue playing netball and something to really aspire to in the future.”
Helen said: “It’s been great to come down and really give back to what I was doing when I was younger – I used to take part in sessions like this so it’s brilliant to see even more being introduced.
“It’s great too that a massive organisation like Wigan Athletic and their players are showing support for netball in their local area.
“There were some brilliant skills on show from the girls and hopefully we can see some of them playing for Manchester Thunder and England in the future.”
The netball coaching is part of the Premier League 4 Sport scheme that is provided by Wigan Athletic Community Trust, which offers 100’s of youngsters in and around Wigan the chance to take part in different sports, including: athletics, badminton, basketball, hockey, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and now netball.
