Latics continued their unbeaten run in the Football League Youth Alliance on Saturday with a 0-0 draw away at Oldham Athletic.  A solid, committed display wasn't enough to claim all three points, with the clinical edge the only thing missing from what coach Peter Atherton described as a positive performance.

League leaders Bury pushed themselves onto 51 points at the weekend, with Latics sat in second on 47, but the top two are still to meet next month, and Atherton's side have a game in hand.

Changes were made to the starting XI due to illness and injury, with three Under 16s making an appearance by the end of the game in the forms of Chris Merrie, Chris Sang and Sam Stubbs.

Latics carved out a number of chances throughout the afternoon, but they couldn't break the Oldham resolve, the first of which came in the opening 45 minutes when James Barrigan chested down a scooped pass only for his eventual shot to be smothered by the keeper inside the area.

Liam Lambert flashed a shot of his own across the box going close, with substitute Sang then denied a goal in the second half due to an offside flag.  The striker got onto the end of a parried shot from Alex Cvetkovic, but he'd strayed marginally offside.

The golden opportunity came late on, but again Latics were thwarted when Adrian Purzycki wriggled through one-on-one only to be denied by the Oldham stopper.

Latics' defensive performance was praised by Atherton, who was impressed by his back five, saying:

"The overall performance was very good.  We just lacked that clinical touch on the day, but defensively we were solid and competed well.

"Our manner and our application on a poor pitch was also very impressive, as was our dominance in the second half."

Latics: Absalom, Burke, McNally (Lingard 58), Merrie, Anson, Balogun, Cvetkovic, Purzycki, Barrigan (Stubbs 82), Trialist, Lambert (Sang 72)
Unused Subs: Bannister, Foukamene
