Latics kept up their unbeaten run since September, but lost ground on the Football League Youth Alliance's leading duo at the weekend, drawing 0-0 at Christopher Park to Shrewsbury Town, whilst Rochdale and Bury both picked up victories.

A stalemate at the training ground leaves Latics on 52 points with a game in hand over both Dale and the Shakers, who sit on 59 and 58 points respectively.

Saturday proved a tough encounter for both sides, with Latics creating half chances and one late opportunity. Shrewsbury themselves carved out a few telling chances, but Owen Evans prevented them with the outstanding save of the game during the second half.

The first half had very little in it, a cagey contest with neither team producing so much as a flash point as the game was congested in the middle.

Latics started the second half brightly though, with Charley Edge volleying just wide of the left post after Adrian Purzycki's knock down.

Not long after, Louis Robles headed just behind the right post from Arnie Baxendale's cross, but it was at the other end where Latics produced their best moment of the game.

After scoring the winning penalty in the midweek shootout victory against Carlisle United, Wales youth international Owen Evans was as sharp as ever to deny Tom King from distance as he tipped the effort around his right post.

It was the best opportunity of the game for both sides up until stoppage time.  Robles forced a run down the right, cutting inside to find Josh Gregory on the edge of the box, he switched the play left to substitute Callum Lang, but as he shaped to shoot a last ditch block denied him what could have been the winning goal.

Late, consecutive corner weren't enough for Latics to force that crucial winner, as they had to settle for a point.

Latics: Evans, Baxendale, Lingard, Gregory, Anson, McNally, Cvetkovic (Lang 78), Purzycki, Cosgrove (Harrison 68), Robles, Edge (Barrigan 56)
Unused subs: Lambert, Bannister
