- “Dave Whelan’s achievements at Wigan Athletic deserve to be immortalised” - David Sharpe.
Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan is to be bestowed with the title of club Life President while plans have also been announced for a statue of the former Chairman to be erected outside the DW Stadium.
The stadium stands as Mr. Whelan’s enduring legacy to the town of Wigan and Latics Chairman David Sharpe has revealed plans to create a fitting tribute to the man who presided over the transformation of the club during his incredible twenty year tenure as Chairman.
“What my grandfather achieved at Wigan Athletic is beyond the dreams of anyone connected with the club and I feel it is fitting to honour those achievements, firstly with the title of Life President and secondly with a statue which we are planning to erect outside the main entrance of the DW Stadium.”
Sharpe added: “My grandfather transformed the club forever and I know that every Wigan Athletic supporter appreciates the things he has done for us and will support both of these ideas.”
Plans for the statue are currently lodged at Wigan Council for outline approval and it is hoped that the club can start work on the project if and when approval is granted.
