Latics basketball player crowned Streetball Champion at national finals.
A team of junior basketball players represented Wigan Athletic last Sunday in the Basketball England Premier League 4 Sport National Competition, where one member of the team, Mindaugus Svarcas, was crowned Streetball Champion.
Wigan Athletic Community Trust run the Premier League 4 Sport programme in and around Wigan, providing young people with the chance to play a variety of sports, including athletics, badminton, basketball, hockey, netball, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.
The Wigan Athletic team for the competition, made up of players from the Premier League 4 Sport basketball sessions at Wigan Youth Zone, took on teams from Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, Tottenham Hotspur and West Brom.
After winning all of their other games, the Latics side lost their match against eventual competition winners Tottenham Hotspur, which meant that they finished 2nd in the group and unfortunately didn’t make it through to the knock out stages.
But Mindaugus Svarcas made sure the team didn’t leave empty handed, winning the individual Streetball Competition with full marks and the fastest time across a number of basketball challenges.
Zac Taylor, Premier League 4 Sport co-ordinator, said: “The team played really well in the competition and were unlucky not to make it out of the group stages.
“All of the boys had a great time taking part, especially Mindaugus, who showed off his skills and played excellently to be named Streetball Champion.”
Premier League 4 Sport is supported by the Premier League and Sport England.
