Winstanley College A Level student Joe Keulemans wasn’t looking forward to today’s physics mock exam – but it’s a day he’ll never forget now after the Chairman and Manager of his beloved Latics walked in to class to hand him his season card in person - along with the kit he will wear after he was announced as the fourth supporter to fulfill a dream and get to play at the DW Stadium this weekend, as part of the Intersport Community Cup.
Long-time season card holder Joe, along with his father James, were among the first to renew for the 2015-16 season in the first hour after season cards went on sale yesterday, Tuesday 5 May, and were entered into the draw to win the chance of playing at the DW.
His name was picked out of the hat by manager Gary Caldwell who decided to go the extra mile and present him with his card and shirt in person.
“I asked David to come along with me and meet Joe,” he said, “because it’s people like him we need at the club. I wish we could have gone and met a lot more supporters this week to thank them for their loyalty but we had to pick one and Joe was lucky enough to have his name picked out of the hat.
“We contacted Winstanley College and to see Joe’s face when David and I walked in was worth the trip alone.
“We chatted about the team for a bit and it’s just great to be able to show to supporters like him that they do matter to everyone, especially the Chairman and Manager. It’s their support next season, and for years ahead that is the heartbeat of our club. I hope he enjoys himself playing at the stadium on Saturday.”
David Sharpe added: “Joe looked a bit shell-shocked when we walked in but he relaxed and we had a good chat. I want to thank him and all the others who have renewed or bought season cards and urge as many of our fans to follow suit because we need their support.”
Joe said: “I thought it was a promotion for the community department or something when they walked in but when Gary held up the shirt with my name on it I just couldn’t believe it.
“It’s brilliant that Gary and David felt I was important, it makes me feel that I really belong to the club and makes me twice as determined to get behind the team now next season. It’s going to be tough in League One but all Latics fans need to believe.”
