MILES OF SMILES FOR LATICS MASCOT ALFIE

4 November 2015

Latics fan, Alfie Farmer, treated to dream mascot experience through Miles of Smiles.

Wigan Athletic helped to make 8-year-old fan Alfie Farmer’s dreams come true last weekend, as his wish to be Latics mascot for the day was granted by the football club at their home game against Swindon Town, thanks to Lancashire charity Miles of Smiles.

Miles of Smiles, who ‘organise special treats – or ‘smiles’ – for youngsters who need and deserve a smile in their life’, made sure that Alfie’s mascot experience was unforgettable, adding on exciting extra treats to make his day complete.

Alfie’s dream day started with a special gift of full Wigan Athletic home and away kits, before a limousine collected him and his family for the journey from his home to the stadium.

When he arrived, Alfie’s first stop was the club shop, where he picked up a Latics football ready for the players to sign – not only did he get to meet the players, he met them inside the home changing room as they prepared for kick off!

After having photographs with all of the team - and making sure his ball was fully signed! - Alfie made his way around the DW Stadium on a tour, stopping off at stadium restaurant Rigalettos for lunch.

Of course, the most important moment of the day finally arrived when Alfie got to walk out with captain Craig Morgan and the rest of his Latics heroes, as they made their way onto the pitch for kick off.

And Francisco Junior’s last minute winner for Wigan made sure that the smile didn’t leave Alfie’s face at all that afternoon.

Alfie’s mum, Laura, said: “We just want to say thank you to everyone at Wigan Athletic and Miles of Smiles for helping to make our son’s dream come true, especially Julie at the club for looking after us and Karen and Joe from Miles of Smiles, you truly are amazing people for doing all that you do.

“Alfie hasn’t stopped talking about the day – he’s describing it as the best day of his life, I think that says it all!

Joe Comerford, a volunteer at Miles of Smiles, said: “When we asked Alfie if he could have one wish what would it be, he said he’d love to be a mascot for his favourite team – Wigan Athletic.

“Alfie had the most amazing day with his family, a money-can’t-buy experience, which Miles of Smiles couldn’t have done without the help of the football club.

“Thank you to everyone who helped to make Alfie’s day – he will remember the experience forever!”
