Sam Cosgrove and Owen Evans play at Just Join In disability sports festival.
Wigan Athletic Development Squad duo Sam Cosgrove and Owen Evans joined in with a disability sports festival at the Powerleague Soccerdome last Friday, where Wigan Athletic Community Trust ran several football workshops for high school students with disabilities from across Wigan.
Throughout the day, the 200 students taking part worked their way around the sports festival, practicing their football possession, shooting and passing skills with the Wigan Athletic Community Trust coaches.
Owen and Sam joined in with the afternoon’s football tournament, joining opposing teams and playing against each other in several mini matches and helping the students to find the back of the net.
Owen said: “I’ve really enjoyed it, everyone’s been really friendly and all the kids have done fantastically – you can tell that there’s been a lot of hard work gone into organising this event.
“Football’s a great way of bringing communities together and I think Wigan are one of the best at doing that in the country, and it’s really showing here – it’s been a great day out and everyone’s happy and enjoying themselves.”
Sam added: “It’s great seeing so many schools taking part in the festival – I’m actually sweating from playing the matches with them, they’re all working really hard.”
As well as football games with Wigan Athletic Community Trust, there were also chances for the students to have a go at other sports like badminton, rugby and tennis with coaches from WLCT and Wigan Warriors Community Foundation, thanks to Wigan School Games organising the festival.
