Wigan Athletic striker Chris Sang has been named as the winner of September's League Football Education (LFE) Goal of the Month for his timely finish against Port Vale, following a flowing team move in Latics' 3-0 victory at Christopher Park.

Sang received over 800 votes, beating off competition from Portsmouth's Adam May in second and Plymouth Argyle's Billy Palfrey in third.

On hearing the news about the award, Head of Academy Gregor Rioch said:

"First I'd like to thank everyone who voted for the goal.  It's a team goal and it's a very good example of what we're trying to achieve in the Under 18s and throughout the Academy.

"It's also nice for individuals to get accolades, and with the support of the staff and fans voting for Chris he will really enjoy it.

"It's nice for the supporters to be involved in this voting process so that they get to know our players of the future, and we would really appreciate it if they can get involved again when our players are nominated."

Sang himself was delighted to win the award, but insists the goal was all about the combinations between his team mates.

"It's a great feeling to be voted for by so many people and it's great to know that the supporters are so interested in our team.

"The goal started from Josh Beaumont and I held the ball up to bring others into the play. I played it off to Luke Burgess, who gave it to Chris Merrie, he worked it wide to Alex Lingard, Chris continued his run into the box and I just had the instinct to be in the centre of the box for the finish."

You can see Latics' Under 18s in action on Tuesday 27 October at Robin Park Arena, kick off 3.00pm, as they host York City in the first round of the FA Youth Cup.

Latics are also in action on Saturday 31 October at Robin Park against Notts County in the Football League Youth Alliance Cup, the perfect chance to see the Under 18s play ahead of the first team fixture against Swindon Town.
