Latics turned on the style in the final 13 minutes at Robin Park Arena this afternoon, scoring four goals in the short spell towards the end of the game to secure a 4-0 victory over previously unbeaten Shrewsbury Town, thanks to goals from Sean Murray (penalty), Danny O'Brien, Sanmi Odelusi and Sam Cosgrove.

Murray confidently dispatched from the spot to finally crack Shrewsbury's rearguard, after Ryan Jennings was sent tumbling in the area.  Substitute O'Brien then struck an accurate low effort into the bottom corner, before Odelusi scored a brilliant individual effort to lob the keeper.  Cosgrove rounded off the display with a calm finish from close range thanks to an assist from Louis Robles.

Slovenian forward Haris Vuckic returned from injury for a 30 minute spell in the first half, with the Newcastle United loanee one of six first team squad members on display, including Jordan Flores, Jack Hendry and Tim Chow.

Latics began the game under some early pressure, but they rode it out and eventually became the imposing power, working their first big chance in the 18th minute.

Jennings burst into life down the right hand side, side-stepping the left full back before whipping a right footed effort just wide of the top left corner.

Combinations started to show in midfield, with Tim Chow linking up well alongside Jennings, Flores and Murray.

The half hour mark saw Vuckic depart in a planned substitution, with Robles introduced, and almost on the score sheet before the break.  Odelusi pulled the ball back through the area for the striker, only for his low effort to be turned away by Shrewsbury goalkeeper Shaun Rowley, who leaped back up to then deny Flores' follow up, tipping the ball onto and over the cross bar.

Shrewsbury rarely threatened as Latics kept it tight at the back, with Jack Hendry vocal alongside Adam Anson and Luke Burke.  On the seldom occasion that the visitors broke the offside trap, goalkeeper Owen Evans was on hand to deny them in what was a comfortable afternoon for the Welsh youth international.

Shortly after the hour mark O'Brien was introduced to replace Chow, with the winger almost making an instant impact when he dragged a right footed effort just wide of the left post.

Moments later Robles went even closer to opening the scoring with a close range header, only to be denied by Rowley once more.

Shrewsbury eventually cracked in the 77th minute, with the dangerous dribbling ability of Jennings unpicking the defence, before he was tumbled to the ground in the box by Sam Patterson.

Murray stepped up coolly to drive the ball low into the bottom left corner for 1-0.  And so the goals began.

Three minutes later O'Brien mustered almost a carbon copy of his earlier chance, powering beyond the full back down the right, before cutting inside onto his left foot to find the bottom corner at the far post.

Another three minutes went by before Odelusi's moment of magic in the box, chesting down a headed clearance with his back to goal, before flicking the ball over the defender's head and lobbing Rowley from close range.

Latics continued to push for more goals as they searched for a repeat of last season's meeting at Christopher Park, and in the 89th minute late substitute Cosgrove provided.

The tenacious running of Robles down the left paid off, when his low cross from the left edge of the area found Cosgrove lurking to calmly finish from close range.

Robles almost got his customary goal in injury time, but his whipped effort from the edge of the area skimmed off the top of the cross bar.
