  • ‘It’s nice to give something back’ – Jason Pearce.

Jordy Hiwula and Jason Pearce went back to school on Tuesday, as they joined in with one of the Community Trust’s Schools Sports sessions, at Christ Church Primary School in Leigh.

The whole school turned out to cheer on the Latics duo as they joined in with the PE lesson, and the players were eager to share their skills with the children in 3v3 football matches.

Jason said: “Me and Jordy enjoyed coming down, there were some great footballers here so it was actually a bit of a challenge!

“A lot of kids aspire to be footballers so it’s nice to give something back to people who look up to you.”

The Community Trust’s Schools Sports programme, which is provided with support from the Premier League, offers PE Curriculum support and After School Clubs to Primary Schools, aiming to keep students engaged and entertained in PE lessons.

Michael Hudson, PE Teacher at Christ Church, said: “The children loved having the players here, they had been bubbling with excitement all afternoon waiting for them to come down and just play football with them.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for them; a lot of our children might not get the chance to go and watch football outside of school, so to have two professional players come in to the school was brilliant.

“Working with Wigan Athletic Community Trust has been brilliant for the school, we’ve seen a real increase in the amount of children wanting to attend after school clubs and that’s down to the coaches from Wigan coming in and the children enjoying the sessions they provide.”

This year, seventeen Wigan schools are signed up to the Schools Sports programme, with another thirty schools receiving half termly and after school support throughout the year.
