Latics in contention for early silverware.

Latics are in contention for a piece of early-season silverware after being shortlisted for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Team of the Round award.

After twice coming from behind away to Crewe Alexandra 3-2 in the second round of the tenth Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, Latics have been chosen alongside Oxford United and Sheffield United.

The hosts took an early lead through Marcus Haber following a missed penalty from Sanmi Odelusi, but Latics soon hit back through Jordy Hiwula to equalise.  Ten minutes before the break Crewe were once again ahead through Ryan Colclough, only for Latics to turn on the style in the second half, scoring twice in the space of six minutes.

Hiwula was on target with his second of the evening, before Yanic Wildschut, making his first club start, thumped in a sensational winning goal (as seen below).

The winning team is set to be selected by a panel of judges over the coming days and will receive a supply of Johnstone’s Paint to utilise on a club project, as well as a trophy.

Richard Mazurkiewicz, marketing manager for Johnstone’s Trade, said:

“In very different ways, Oxford, Sheffield United and Wigan all showed exceptional qualities in the second round to keep alive their Wembley dreams.

“For Wigan to show the battling qualities to twice come from behind to turn the game on its head was an excellent performance.

“All three nominations for our Team of the Round award have strong credentials and the judges are going to have a very difficult choice when they come to select a winner.”

Johnstone’s has been bringing colour to the beautiful game since it began sponsoring the Football League Trophy in 2006.
