Latest Community Trust Apprentices meet Latics manager Gary Caldwell.

Six sports apprentices recruited by Wigan Athletic Community Trust met Latics manager Gary Caldwell last week at Christopher Park Training Ground.

The youngsters started the 18-month apprenticeship with the Community Trust this month and will gain a Level 3 qualification in Sport while working on a range of football and sports projects during their placements.

Eighteen-year-old apprentice Jack Knowles, said: “I have always enjoyed P.E and sport and want to have a career in the industry following completion of this apprenticeship.

“I am really looking forward to working with young people, helping to improve their health and fitness over time.”

Adam Sherratt, Education Officer for Wigan Athletic Community Trust, said: “This apprenticeship offers a fantastic opportunity for young people who are passionate about sport and developing a career in sport and education.

“They work, learn and earn as part of Wigan Athletic Community Trust, as well as gaining a range of industry recognised qualifications.

“Meeting the manager was a great experience for the young lads – Gary is someone they look up to and the experience can hopefully be something that they use to improve their sports coaching in the future.”

The Community Trust has operated an apprentice scheme in partnership with Pro- Co, one of Wigan’s leading learning and skills providers, for the last four years and past apprentices have gone on to continue their studies at University, as well as finding full time employment with the Trust.
