Latics collected a much deserved point at Robin Park Arena on Saturday morning in a 1-1, but will be disappointed not to have claimed all three points in a match they dominated in possession against a physical Shrewsbury Town side.

Josh Gregory guided in an equaliser with 10 minutes remaining, after a mistake by goalkeeper Kelland Absalom at the other end allowed Shrewsbury captain Callum Roberts to prod home from close range in the 56th minute.

It was a controlled performance throughout the first half with a number of near misses for Latics, and after the visitors took the lead, the game went even more in favour of Will Ryder's team, who attempted to bombard the Shrewsbury penalty area.

Latics began the game with a number of half chances and good pressure on the Shrewsbury back line through James Barrigan, Callum Lang and Chris Sang, with the midfield battling well against the physicality of their opponents.

Inside 24 minutes Lang produced Latics first clear-cut opportunity, when he latched onto the end of a superb Matty Rimmer pass over the top, but the forward was denied by the feet of Leon Reece.

Latics built their attacks from the back each time, with Luke Burke and Sam Stubbs often taking control, before feeding possession in midfield for Gregory, Rimmer and Chris Merrie.

Wide play also played a big part for the hosts, with Lang's header late on in the first half skimming off the top of the cross bar from Alex Lingard's cross.

Lang came close again shortly after the restart when Josh Beaumont fed him inside the area down the right, but his finish could only find the side netting.

Five minutes later, and against the run of play, Shrewsbury found themselves ahead.  A corner from the visitors' left was dropped in the area by Absalom, and scooped up by Roberts for a simple close range finish.

Latics almost responded immediately, but Lang's pull back from the by-line after a forceful run was turned over by Rimmer in the area.

A big push followed as Latics sought out a crucial equaliser, and it deservedly followed with 10 minutes remaining as Gregory rose at the back post to perfectly guide in a header from Lingard's left sided delivery.

Latics continued to bombard the Shrewsbury area in the final stages, but couldn't find that all important winning goal.
