  • Middlesbrough winger signs for Latics on three month loan.
  • 23-year-old Yanic Wildschut is graduate of Ajax academy.
  • “We have lacked a genuine wide player this season” - Caldwell.
Wigan Athletic can confirm that former Holland U21 winger Yanic Wildschut has joined Latics on a three month loan from Middlesbrough.

The 23-year-old will be available for Saturday’s visit of Walsall and manager Gary Caldwell is excited at what the Dutchman brings to the squad.

“He’s something we definitely haven’t got at the moment,” said Caldwell, “we’ve lacked that bit of creativity from the flanks and we were interested as soon as we found out he may be available.

“With his background - coming through at Ajax - he is technically very comfortable and has had 12 months to get used to the pace of the English game. He is a very powerful boy, who stands at over 6ft tall and one we have been admiring from a distance and with him not being involved at the moment, he is looking for game time. Hopefully it will be an arrangement that suits everyone. We look forward to working with him.”

Wildschut joined Middlesbrough in September 2014 from Heerenveen and made his Middlesbrough debut as second half substitute at Anfield against Liverpool in the Capital One Cup – a game that ended as a 2-2 draw, with Boro going down 14-13 in the penalty shootout.

He scored on first league start in a 3-0 win at Rotherham, on his birthday, November 1 and scored again in a 4-0 home win against Norwich. He also came on as a late substitute in the 1-1 draw at the DW Stadium.

He has made only two appearances this season, scoring once in the 3-1 Capital One Cup victory at home to Oldham.

His professional career began at FC Zwolle in 2010 having progressed through the academy at Ajax. He went on to play 61 times for VVV Venlo between 2011 and 2013, scoring 7 goals and joined Heerenveen in 2013, where he made 22 appearances in total, scoring twice. He also had a spell on loan at ADO Den Haag in 2014 before sealing his move to England.
