Juan Carlos says thank you to Wigan Athletic for their messages of support.

  • Fleetwood Town match dedicated to Juan Carlos Garcia.
  • Supporters and former players sent in best wishes for Honduras defender.
  • Money raised for Leukaemia Care at Fleetwood match.
Wigan Athletic came together last Saturday during the Sky Bet League One match against Fleetwood Town and dedicated the match to Honduras international defender Juan Carlos Garcia, who is still continuing his treatment for Leukaemia in the North West.

Juan Carlos said: “Thank you to all the Latics fans and to the players for doing this.  It helps me to know everyone is thinking about me.”

Fans and players alike sent messages of goodwill, the players of both teams warmed up in bespoke Leukaemia care T-shirts while Leukaemia Care were able to raise funds through a bucket collection – and a special surprise donation by the club.

Chairman David Sharpe announced that the club would match the money raised by the FuerzaJCGarcia group of Latics fans who organised a legends charity match in July, who presented a cheque for £2,386.14 to Leukaemia Care on the pitch at half-time.

Players who sent messages included Honduras team mates Roger Espinoza and Maynor Figueroa, James McArthur, Jordi Gomez, Ivan Ramis, Oriol Riera, James McClean and Ali Al Habsi while many fans also sent their words.

Latics manager Gary Caldwell dedicated the victory to Juan Carlos and said: “It was an emotional moment when all the supporters applauded on 23 minutes and we wish Juan Carlos the best of luck in his continuing fight.

“I’m very happy the club and the supporters came together for Juan Carlos, it tells you so much about Wigan Athletic and what we stand for.”

Kevin Hateley from Leukaemia Care said:

“We’d like to thank Wigan Athletic and for their supporters for their wonderful support we received at the Fleetwood match. Every little helps in supporting our work.”
