Wigan Athletic's Development Squad head to Turf Moor this evening for the opening round of the third annual Under 21 Premier League Cup, as they take on Burnley at this stage of the competition for the second time in three years.

The hosts head into the encounter on somewhat of a hot-streak of form, unbeaten in seven matches, with victories over Manchester City (6-2), Wolverhampton Wanderers (1-0), Everton (4-0) and Hartlepool United (3-0).

Burnley's latest fixture saw them draw 3-3 at home to Fleetwood Town in their opening game of Final Third Development League Cup.

Latics arrive at Turf Moor with mixed fortunes so far this season, having won, drawn and lost in their opening three matches of the season.

It began with a 3-2 victory over local rivals Bolton Wanderers in the Lancashire FA Senior Cup, before a 2-2 draw away at Port Vale in the Final Third Development League, followed by a 6-3 defeat to the Valiants in the League Cup last week.

Although a relatively new cup competition, the Under 21 Premier League Cup has thrown up some memorable matches for Latics' youngsters.

Last season saw Peter Atherton's side thump Preston North End 5-0 in the opening round, before an impressive 3-1 victory away to an experienced Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.  Unfortunately the cup run came to an end in the 'Round of 32' after a thrilling 4-4 draw with Bolton was followed by a 4-1 defeat on penalties.

The year previous also ended in heartbreak on penalties, after a 0-0 draw at Turf Moor against Burnley resulted in a 7-6 defeat in a shootout.

Admission for this evening's match is just £3.00 for adults and £1.00 for concessions in the Bob Lord Stand.
