Wigan Athletic can confirm that Slovenian international forward Haris Vučkić has joined on a season-long loan from Newcastle United.

The 23-year-old put pen to paper on a deal shortly before the end of the transfer window and Latics manager Gary Caldwell said:

“Haris had a great season on loan at Rangers last season and he is a quality addition to our forward line, a creative player with an eye for goal. Newcastle rate him highly but he needs to keep progressing and is looking to play as regularly as possible. We are delighted he has chosen Wigan Athletic.”

He becomes the first Slovenian player to represent the club and arrived at Newcastle from NK Domžale in 2009. He has made 18 first team appearances for the Magpies, scoring his only goal in a 1-0 victory over Atromitos in the UEFA Europa League in August 2012.

He spent three months with Cardiff City during the 2011-12 season, scoring once in five appearances, then four goals in 26 appearances for Rotherham United during the 2013-14 season.

The nine goals he scored in 24 appearances in all competitions at Rangers came in a three month loan between February and May of last season.

Capped regularly at youth international level by Slovenia, Vučkić has gone on to win one senior cap so far.
