22 April 2016

LaticsPlayer HD sat down with Gary Caldwell on Friday morning to discuss Saturday’s game with Southend United and recent events at the DW Stadium.

  • "Being back at the DW Stadium will allow us to get back to playing our way,” Caldwell says.
  • Boss pleased for individuals who have received recent awards but adds main prize still up for grabs.
  • “Burton could prove valuable,” adds Gary.
Caldwell on value of point at Burton Albion…

It can be very valuable to us; in the position we were in I think a point was always going to be a more positive result for us.

We had to work extremely hard and show a lot of spirit to get it because Burton were putting everything in themselves to try and get the win, as we were but as the game went on we had to defend and work hard and I thought our overall desire to get a positive result was excellent.

It is a small, lower league stadium and it gives a good atmosphere whilst the standing also gives a different atmosphere to a normal game.

It was a great advert for the league with the two top teams going toe-to-toe and giving it everything and I am sure everyone that was there would see that.

Michael Jacobs and Craig Morgan returning…

We changed it about a bit and having Michael back was huge for us because he has been a fantastic player for us and we missed him whilst he was out injured.

He brings us goals, assists and energy to the team and I thought for his first game back he was really good on the night and we are happy to have him back in the team.

In defence, we changed it at Burton with having three at the back and that saw Stephen Warnock play in the middle and Craig on the right and I thought it worked well.

Stephen, Craig and Jason Pearce defended well on the night and when we were put under pressure they didn’t create many chances because of the way we defended.

The return of David Perkins from suspension…

It is great to have him back because I think we missed him on Tuesday; we missed his energy and his enthusiasm for the game because I think that rubs off on players around him.

We are glad to have him back and available for Saturday.

On potential changes for Saturday…

I am not sure yet; we recovered on Thursday and we will have a look at the players today and work on a few different things in preparation for Southend and then we will see what we will go with tomorrow.

On Southend United…

I think you always have something play for when you play football; whether it be personal pride, a contract or whatever, there is always something riding on the game.

I saw their game recently where Walsall had to work very hard to beat them and they put them under a lot of pressure as well.

This won’t be easy, this will be a very difficult game, and we have to be fully focused for it.

On being back at the DW and how the game will shape up differently to Roots Hall…

They’re a team that have got a lot of positive results at home and it was a very difficult and tight game down there in November.

I think Saturday will be different because we are at home and we can go out on a bigger pitch, a better surface and play our way and take the game to them.

On recent accolades…

I think it just shows how well we have done this season and it is great for the individuals that have won awards but I think the main prize is still up for grabs and we have to focus on our job for Saturday to make sure that we keep ahead in the race for it.
